How to Choose the Proper Keywords to Utilise for Your Site

If you already have a website, then good for you. But as you may already be aware, merely having a website isn’t enough in today’s increasingly competitive world.

How to Choose the Proper Keywords to Utilise for Your Site
Thinking about your keywords can make a big difference to your website's success

This website of yours needs to have the right amount of exposure – in other words, it needs to have a top spot in search engines so you can reach out to more customers. If you want to make sure that your website ranks well in searches through Google and other search engines, then you need to choose the proper keywords. Here’s how to do it.

Know your sector and specialty

First of all, if you want to be sure that you are choosing the right keywords, you need to be fully aware of your sector and your specialty. What industry are you in? What kinds of products or services do you have? Do you have a brand name? How about your location? What makes your business so special? By determining all of these, you can have an easier time creating relevant keywords and phrases for your business. For example – if you are offering car parts in Norfolk, then the keyword phrase ‘car parts Norfolk’ may be an obvious – and good – choice.

Find out the keywords your competitors use

Some of you may consider this a bit ‘below the belt,’ but think about it – it’s business, and you’re technically not doing anything wrong. It’s just the same as visiting your competitor’s shop just to see what they are offering. Try to find out what keywords your competitors actually use, and you may be able to re-direct a little of their website traffic to your own site.

The importance of embedding keywords

You should also make sure that the keywords you choose are properly embedded into your site. We’re not just talking here about embedding keywords in the content of your site – they also need to be embedded in every page’s title tag, in every page’s headings, and in the sub-headings. Pay attention to metadata tags as well, as search engines like Google analyse these.

Monitor the effectiveness of your keywords

Once you have chosen the keywords to use for your website’s ranking in search engines, it should also be a priority for you to track their effectiveness. After all, how will you know if the keywords are working if you don’t know how effective they are? You should make it a point to monitor and track your keyword effectiveness, and you can do this through tools such as Google Analytics or through checking the log files of your web server, which you can get from your hosting provider. If your keywords are not drumming up visits or clicks to your site, it may be a good idea to modify them again.
